The Unsinkable Legend
Boston Whaler was founded in 1958 by Richard "Dick" Fisher in Massachusetts. Fisher's obsession was a simple one: most boats sink when damaged, and he thought that was an engineering failure, not bad luck. His answer was Unibond construction — a polyurethane foam core injected between fiberglass skins, fusing hull, liner, and deck into one solid, unsinkable unit.
The legend was made in 1961, when Fisher sat in a Boston Whaler on a Massachusetts pond while a saw cut the boat in half beneath him; both halves floated, and he drove the stern away in front of Life magazine's cameras. Sales took off. Ownership changed hands repeatedly — CML Group in 1969, Reebok in 1989, Meridian Sports in 1994 — before Brunswick Corporation bought the company in 1996 and folded it into what is now the Brunswick Boat Group. Today's Whalers are built in Edgewater, Florida, and paired with Mercury outboards, Brunswick's sister company.
Why Boston Whaler
No other production boat is built like a Whaler. The foam core is structural, not just flotation, which is why the brand's "unsinkable legend" claim has survived six decades of marketing hype elsewhere in the industry. The result is a boat that rides heavier and drier than its length suggests, resists dock rash, and holds value better than nearly anything in its class — used Whalers routinely command premiums over comparable center consoles.
That durability comes with tradeoffs. Whalers are heavier than pure performance hulls, so they are not the fastest ride in their class, and the brand's premium pricing carries into the used market — you will not find many bargains. The hulls derive from C. Raymond Hunt's deep-V heritage, so the ride is solid and predictable rather than sharp. Reputation among owners is unusually loyal: this is the boat people buy after a scare, or to avoid having one.
For used buyers, the classics deserve respect but demand scrutiny: a 1980s Montauk or Outrage can still be a superb boat, provided the fuel tank, wiring, and transom have been properly maintained or replaced — Neff Yacht Sales suggests budgeting for a rigging survey on anything over 20 years old.

Frequently Asked Questions
For serious offshore fishing, the 350 or 420 Outrage is the gold standard — these are full-featured tournament fishing machines with exceptional range and offshore capability. For inshore and nearshore fishing, the 270 or 280 Outrage offers the ideal combination of fishability and versatility. The 345 Conquest is a popular choice for families who want fishing capability with cabin accommodations.
Boston Whaler's exceptional resale value stems from three factors: the unsinkable hull construction that never deteriorates, the brand's reputation for safety and quality, and the deep pool of motivated buyers at every price point. A well-maintained Whaler from the 1990s is still a desirable boat today — the foam-filled hull doesn't rot, delaminate, or lose its structural integrity the way other construction methods can.
Absolutely. Boston Whalers from the 1980s and 1990s are excellent value propositions — the hull construction is as sound as the day they were built, and many have been well-maintained by owners who understand the brand's value. The main considerations are engine condition (outboards from that era may need replacement) and cosmetic condition. A properly surveyed older Whaler can provide years of reliable service.
Yamaha and Mercury are the most common outboard brands on used Boston Whalers, with Evinrude (now discontinued) also well-represented on older models. Yamaha is particularly popular in South Florida for its reliability and service network. The 420 Outrage typically runs quad 300hp outboards, while the 350 Outrage runs triple or quad configurations.
Absolutely. We offer full-service Boston Whaler brokerage including professional photography, targeted marketing to our buyer database, MLS listing, and representation through closing. Contact us for a complimentary market valuation.
