The Carver Story
Carver began in 1954 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, when two marine-industry veterans — Charles "Charlie" Carter and George Verhagen — stopped selling boats and started building them, beginning with mahogany runabouts. In 1963 they sold the business to Walter "Wally" Markham and Glen Nordin, who moved it into fiberglass construction and grew it from a regional builder into an international brand.
Carver found its identity in the aft-cabin motor yacht: a floating vacation home with a private aft stateroom, a flybridge, and interior volume that embarrassed longer boats. The company peaked with the Voyager pilothouse line and launched the premium Marquis Yachts sub-brand in 2004, building 59- and 65-foot motor yachts in Pulaski, Wisconsin. After a late-stage acquisition by the Marquis-Larson group, Carver ended production in 2021 — which is why every Carver on the market today is a pre-owned opportunity, often priced below comparable Sea Rays and Cruisers.
Why Carver
Carver never tried to be fast or glamorous. It built big, comfortable, sensible cruising boats — the kind of yacht a family actually lived on for summers. Interiors were the priority: wide side decks traded for cabin space, and layouts emphasized staterooms, salon volume, and galley-down or galley-up livability. Performance was modest and fuel-conscious; these are displacement-to-semi-displacement cruisers, not sport boats.
In the market, Carver occupied the accessible luxury tier of production motor yachts — well below the price of European flybridge brands, with resale that was steady rather than spectacular. That equation now works in the used buyer's favor: Carvers offer more interior volume per dollar than almost anything on the brokerage market.
One practical note for buyers: Carvers were built with widely available systems and engines, so parts and service come from a deep bench of suppliers and independent yards. That makes a thorough survey essential, and it makes well-documented maintenance history the single most valuable line item in a listing — something Neff Yacht Sales weighs heavily when evaluating Carvers.

Frequently Asked Questions
The 570 Voyager Pilothouse is the premier Carver liveaboard — the pilothouse control station, full-beam master stateroom, and generous salon make it genuinely comfortable for extended living aboard. The 56 Voyager is a close second, offering similar amenities at a more accessible price point. Both models have the generator capacity and systems needed for comfortable full-time liveaboard use.
Carver values in the pre-owned market are lower than comparable Hatteras or Viking motor yachts, which is actually an advantage for buyers — you get more boat for your money. The trade-off is that Carver values don't appreciate the way premium brands do. For buyers who plan to use and enjoy the boat rather than treat it as an investment, Carver represents outstanding value.
Yes, with appropriate preparation. Carver motor yachts are capable passage-makers in moderate conditions, and the crossing to the Bahamas is well within their capability. The key is timing — crossing in settled weather with a favorable weather window. The larger Carver models (52 Voyager and above) are particularly well-suited for Bahamas cruising.
Annual maintenance on a used Carver typically runs 5–8% of the vessel's value, depending on age and systems complexity. Generator maintenance, air conditioning service, and watermaker maintenance are the primary ongoing costs beyond engine service. Budget for these systems when evaluating the total cost of ownership.
