The Design Brief
The owner's and builders of Roseate are experienced yachting people. They have many years of cruising. The yacht was to have the capability to enjoy backwaters and bayous without the need to anchor out and dinghy in. Ease of maintenance and ease of access to virtually all systems was a design priority. Durable materials that would hold up well for many years was key. The yacht had to be easily handled by a couple.

All design brief priorities were met.
Roseate's Construction Story
Charlie and Pat Ball were the principle owners and builders of Roseate. Over the years the brothers have built shoal draft boats. In searching for an ideal shoal draft trawler they discovered the New York City naval architect, Dave Gerr. His 42 foot Summer Kyle design was of great interest to Charlie and Pat. Covey Island Boat Works in Nova Scotia had built two of these 42 footers. A Gerr designed 42 was located on the Florida east coast. Charlie and Pat sea trialed that yacht. They were so impressed that they purchased a set of plans from Gerr. With Gerr's permission, Jim Ryan a local naval architect, digitized the drawings and stretched the midsection of the design out to achieve a 44 foot overall length The additional 2' allowed for a more spacious saloon. The brothers leased space at Precision Boat Works, a local boat builder's factory in Palmetto, Florida and finalized construction plans in 2000. Actual construction began in 2001. In 2003 Ray Marshall, a freelance boatbuilder from Nova Scotia joined Roseate's boat building team. A crew from the boat building facility had been working along side Charlie and Pat in the construction. Ray's specialty was ship's carpentry and ship's systems. His vast experience in boatbuilding made him the ideal choice to head up the installation of the boat's mechanical, electrical and plumbing-MEP systems as well as the woodwork. In the fall of 2005 Roseate was ready to be launched. After a series of shakedown cruises Roseate began extended cruising.
- Construction begins in 2001 at space leased from Precision Boat Works.
- Using CAD drawings, stations were cut full size on Mylar sheets
- Completed stations were taken to the boat building facility
- Ribands were set on 3 inch centers
- After many hours of fairing the male plug was complete
- The plug was covered with Corecell foam, except from the water line down-which was solid fiberglass.
- Multiple layers of vinylester resin and biaxial cloth were used to complete the hull
- 1/4" of stainless steel plate was attached to the solid hand layed bottom of the yacht
- The stainless steel plate was more than 32' long and by 5' in width and weights over 1,100 pounds
- The plug was removed from the hull and the interior was lightly faired then glass laid in
- Two layers of 1/2" marine plywood bulkheads were glassed in down to the waterline
- Closed cell foam was glassed in below the waterline making circular bulkheads through the yacht
- High density foam stringers were installed and heavily glassed in for the engine stringers
- A stainless steel framework was bolted in on the stringers
- The 220hp turbocharged Cummins engine was placed on top of the stringers on special soft-rubber mounts as part of the Aquadrive system
- The fuel supply has two Racor fuel filters
- The Aquadrive system includes a thrust bearing and jack shaft from the engine attached by flexible couplers
- This system and configuration virtually eliminates engine vibration from the hull
- The deck and cabin superstructure were molded by using more Corecell foam and fiberglass
- The superstructure was glassed to the hull, creating a monocoque structure
- The monocoque structure does not creak, groan or leak
- All fluid tanks were built of fiberglass and then glassed into the hull structure
- In 2003 Ray Marshall, a freelance boatbuilder from Nova Scotia joined Roseate's boat building team
- Ray's specialty is as a ship's carpenter and MEP systems person with vast boat building experience
- Ray worked for 20 months averaging 50 hours per week heading up the carpentry and installation of the boat's mechanical, electrical and plumbing-MEP systems
- All interior cabinet faces are made from old-growth, deadhead cypress logs pulled from Apalachicola River in northern Florida
- The cabinet and table tops are made from southern longleaf yellow pine that was 400 years old when is was felled by disease
- The natural cork flooring was sealed to prevent staining
- Construction started in 2001 and was substantially finished in the fall of 2005. It took about 10,000 man hours to complete construction
Roseate's construction is high quality with many attributes found only in custom builds.
The Walk Through
A tour of Roseate's interior reinforces the fact that this yacht is a custom build, high quality and functional in every way. Ease of access to systems is obvious and appreciated.
- The forward cabin is a practical V berth arrangement with good head room
- Aft of the forward guest cabin is a walk through head and shower
- The forward shower is large
- The galley down is aft of the forward head and to port
- To starboard are two day bunks
- A center stairs leads up from the galley to the saloon
- Several bilge hatches provides expansive access to the engine and systems
- Inside helm station steering is to port with excellent site lines
- The chart table and electrical distribution panel is to starboard
- The dinette is aft of the chart table and has a hinged leaf
- Two folding captains chairs and the hinged leaf create a six top dinette
- Numerous large portlight provide a light, airy feeling
- The owner's stateroom is aft and down four steps
- The queen berth is to starboard with cabinets and drawers to port
- A head with shower is in the owner's stateroom

- Fuel polishing sytsem
The interior is a study in functional simplicity and seaworthiness. This theme is evident everywhere on Roseate, inside and out.
Flybridge and Exterior
Roseate's exterior, flybridge, fore deck, weather deck are consistent with the rest of the design, a study in form following function. Traditional dinghy storage with mast and boom for deployment make launching easy.
- The flybridge is covered by a newer hardtop
- Solar power includes two 230 watt panels
- Mast lowers to reduce bridge clearance height
- There is a roller furling steadying sail to add stability in a beam sea
- The flybridge is the ideal helm station during favorable weather
- New 24 volt bow thruster, a Vetus 55KGS, was installed in February 2021

Ship's Power and Engine
Roseate is a single engine, straight shaft with an Aquadrive system trawler.
