Model Overview

About the Sea Ray 390 Express

The 390 Express Cruiser, built at the turn of the 1990s (listings run 1989–1991), is the boat that defined the modern express cruiser: 39 feet on a famously wide beam, with a mid-cabin layout, a cockpit built for a crowd, and twin inboard power — MerCruiser gasoline in most, Caterpillar diesels in a sought-after few. Sea Ray sold them in enormous numbers, and three decades on they remain the entry point to classic big-boat cruising: simple systems, vast parts support, and space nothing modern at the price can match.

Performance

On the Water

The 390 Express feels big because it is: a low-20s cruise, a cockpit of genuine entertaining scale, and the stability of all that beam at rest. The cabin — forward berth, mid-cabin, dinette, and head — sleeps a family the way 1980s brochures promised, and generator and air conditioning make weekends aboard complete. Handling is deliberate and predictable, the way a 39-foot inboard should be. It remains the template every express cruiser since has been measured against.

Buyer Guidance

Buying a Used Sea Ray 390 Express

A 390 Express is a surveyor's purchase: hull and deck moisture, stringers, fuel tanks, and engine cooling systems carry the decision, and blister history should be documented. Gasoline boats need manifold and riser dates; the rare diesel needs cooling-system records. Freshwater boats from the Great Lakes are the collectible grade and priced like it. Budget honestly for canvas, upholstery, and electronics and the 390 rewards you with the defining Sea Ray express experience at a fraction of any newer equivalent.
