The Viking Legacy
On April 1, 1964, brothers Bill and Bob Healey bought a struggling wooden boatbuilder on the banks of the Bass River in New Gretna, New Jersey. Neither had built a boat before; Bill was an ironworker, Bob a lawyer. They called it Viking Yachts, switched early to fiberglass, and built it into the largest sportfishing yacht builder in the world, delivering more than 5,000 boats. Bill's son Pat Healey leads the company today as president and CEO, with a third generation now working in the business.
The brand's rise tracks the rise of the modern sportfishing industry: Viking survived the early-1990s luxury tax that devastated American boatbuilding, expanded its New Gretna plant to roughly 880,000 square feet, and launched sister operations including Valhalla Boatworks center consoles. Bob Healey died in 2021 and Bill Healey in 2025, but the family-run structure they built remains intact.
Why Viking
Viking's identity is the tournament sportfisherman — convertibles and express yachts designed to run offshore fast, fish hard, and come home in weather. Hulls are proprietary deep-V designs refined over decades of tournament feedback, paired with extreme vertical integration: Viking manufactures cabinetry, fuel tanks, towers, and much of its rigging in-house, giving it tighter quality control than builders that subcontract major components.
The running surfaces are built for repeated offshore crossings, and the engineering favors owner-operator maintainability — clean engine rooms, labeled systems, and parts support reaching back decades. In the market, Viking is the reference brand for American sportfishing — the default comparison against Hatteras and Cabo.
Pricing sits at the premium end of production sportfishing, and used Vikings hold value well because the tournament community trusts the brand. For used buyers, that makes older Vikings among the safest big-boat purchases — provided hours, service records, and tournament history check out.

South Florida Viking Market
South Florida's offshore canyons, Bahamas crossings, and tournament circuit are exactly the conditions Viking's deep-V hulls were engineered for. The brand's reputation for running offshore fast and coming home in weather is tested and proven on the Gulf Stream crossings and blue-water passages that South Florida anglers run regularly.
Neff Yacht Sales is based in Palm Beach County, giving us direct access to the South Florida brokerage market and a strong network of Viking owners and buyers. We know which questions to ask about each hull's tournament history and service records — on a boat built for hard use, the paper trail matters as much as the condition survey.

Frequently Asked Questions
Viking is the reference brand for American sportfishing — the default comparison for serious tournament anglers. Hatteras is Viking's closest American rival, with a longer history and a slightly different hull character; Hatteras owners tend to be loyal to the brand's traditional styling. Cabo is a smaller, more focused builder known for its semi-custom sportfishers in the 35–45 ft range. Viking's advantage is vertical integration — manufacturing cabinetry, tanks, towers, and rigging in-house — which gives it tighter quality control and stronger parts support than builders that subcontract major components.
Not necessarily — tournament use is fine if maintenance was disciplined. Viking's engineering favors owner-operator maintainability, and a well-documented tournament boat is a known quantity. The key is the paper trail: request full service records, ask specifically about tournament use and any offshore incidents, and verify that maintenance kept pace with hard running. A Viking with complete records and disciplined service history is among the safest big-boat purchases on the used market.
Valhalla Boatworks is Viking's sister company, producing high-performance center consoles (V-33 through V-55) with the same build standards as Viking's sportfishers. Valhalla is Viking's answer to the outboard era — tournament-grade fishing in a center-console format. The boats are built at the New Gretna facility and share Viking's vertical integration philosophy. For buyers who want Viking's build quality in a more versatile, outboard-powered platform, Valhalla is the natural choice.
