Model Overview
The 480 Sundancer was the flagship of the Sundancer line in the 2000s — a 48-foot hardtop express stretching past 50 feet overall, powered in nearly every example by twin Cummins diesels (the QSM11 is the signature installation) on conventional shafts. (Brokers list the model as both 480 and 48 Sundancer; it is the same boat.) Below deck it is a genuine two-stateroom, two-head yacht with a full-beam-feel salon, a proper galley, and cherry joinery throughout. Above, the enclosed bridge deck and sprawling cockpit make it as much an entertainer as a cruiser — a lot of yacht, then and now.
Performance
Big-boat manners define the 480: a cruise in the mid-20-knot range, a soft ride from genuine displacement under you, and handling that stays composed in conditions that send smaller express cruisers home. Shaft drives and a bow thruster make docking methodical rather than dramatic. The bridge-deck helm offers superb visibility, and the cockpit aft is a full second living room that flows straight to the swim platform. This is a boat built for crossings and long weekends, and it still does both superbly.
Buyer Guidance
Cummins service records decide value here: aftercooler and heat-exchanger service, raw-water pumps, and documented oil analysis on the best boats. Test the bow thruster, both air-conditioning zones, and the generator under load, and have the surveyor sound the hull and check the hardtop and windshield seals for leaks. Electronics will be dated by current standards — budget an update and price the boat accordingly. A well-kept 480 Sundancer delivers flagship space and diesel economy at a fraction of replacement cost; a neglected one is a restoration. Buy the records.
